Solar

Transform sunshine into electricity to power your home.

Solar is one of the most recognized forms of renewable energy, and harnessing its power has transformed many homes and businesses across Toronto.

How it works

Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems convert sunlight into electrical energy that can be used to power your home. A typical system consists of solar panels that absorb sunlight and generate electricity, an inverter that's used to change the electricity from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC), as well as mounting, cabling and other electrical accessories.

Solar PV systems range from small, rooftop-mounted panels at low-rise homes to large, utility-scale power stations.

Benefits of solar

  • Greenhouse gas (GHG)-free generation
  • Renewable and locally available
  • Helps reduce electricity bills when combined with our Net Metering Program
  • Scalable to your needs whether you’re a residential, business or industrial customer
  • Generally cost-effective and easy to maintain as there are few moving parts
  • Have an average lifespan of 25+ years, reducing the need for replacements and maximizing the long-term return on investment

Programs to help you save

You can reduce the cost of your solar project by either participating in our Net Metering Program or through the Home Renovation Savings Program.

Net Metering Program

Our Net Metering Program is available to Toronto Hydro customers who generate electricity primarily for their own use from a renewable energy source, such as solar.

Through the Net Metering Program, you can send excess electricity generated from the renewable energy source to Toronto Hydro’s grid in exchange for a credit towards your electricity costs.
