Solar

Transform sunshine into electricity to power your business.

How it works

Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems convert sunlight into electrical energy that can be used to power your business. A typical system consists of solar panels that absorb sunlight and generate electricity, an inverter that's used to change the electricity from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC), as well as mounting, cabling and other electrical accessories.

Solar PV systems range from small, rooftop-mounted panels at low-rise buildings to large, utility-scale power stations.

Benefits of solar

  • Greenhouse gas (GHG)-free generation
  • Renewable and locally available
  • Helps reduce electricity bills when combined with our Net Metering Program
  • Scalable to your needs whether you’re a small business, large building or industrial customer
  • Generally low-cost and easy to maintain as there are few moving parts
  • Has an average lifetime of 25+ years, resulting in fewer replacements and a greater return on investment

Programs to help you save

You can reduce the cost of your solar project by either participating in our Net Metering Program or through Save on Energy's Retrofit Program.

Net Metering Program

Our Net Metering Program is available to Toronto Hydro customers who generate electricity primarily for their own use from a renewable energy source, such as solar.

Through the Net Metering Program, you can send excess electricity generated from the renewable energy source to Toronto Hydro’s grid in exchange for a credit towards your electricity costs. Learn more about our Net Metering Program.

Retrofit Program

Incentives are available through the Save on Energy Retrofit Program for commercial, multi-unit residential, industrial and institutional customers installing behind-the-meter solar under the Prescriptive stream. Projects up to 10 kW (DC) can receive $1,000/kW, while systems over 10 kW and up to 1 MW (AC) can receive $860/kW, covering up to 50% of eligible costs. Visit Save on Energy's Retrofit Program web page to learn more.

Additional solar-related offers and rebates include, but are not limited to, the Accelerated Capital Cost Allowance (ACCA) and the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit (CTITC).
