Powering more places to charge: How we’re helping accelerate EV adoption across Toronto

As electric vehicle (EV) adoption continues to grow across Toronto, access to convenient and reliable charging infrastructure is becoming increasingly important. Toronto Hydro supports the electrification of transportation by making it easier for our customers to connect electric vehicle charging stations. Providing our customers with personalized guidance and support demonstrates our commitment to this goal. As of mid-2026, we’ve helped power more than 3,300 public ev charging stations in total.

Beginning September 10, 2026, four new Shell Recharge charging sites will begin rolling out at select Shell sites across the city. Behind these new locations is a collaborative effort to help bring more charging infrastructure online and support Toronto’s transition to a cleaner energy future.

The new Shell Recharge charging sites will be located at:

  • 627 Dixon Road, Etobicoke, Ontario
  • 2498 Gerrard Street East, Toronto, Ontario
  • 677 Burnhamthorpe Road, Etobicoke, Ontario
  • 5286 Dundas Street West, Etobicoke, Ontario

For public EV charging projects across Toronto, including Shell's latest EV charging expansion, our support goes beyond the standard connection process. Our Customer Energy Management team provides personalized guidance on the connection process, electrical capacity needs and project planning, helping identify opportunities, address potential challenges and streamline decision-making to support the timely rollout of new charging infrastructure across Toronto.

The addition of these four new locations will provide EV drivers with more places to charge where they live, work and travel, while helping to meet the growing demand for public charging infrastructure across the city.

Other ways we’re making it easier to connect public EV chargers

Beyond this project, we’re exploring new, innovative ways to reduce barriers and make charging infrastructure faster and easier to connect.

This past spring, we launched an EV fast charging pilot program that offers eligible charging providers direct access to 480-volt transformer service and eliminates the need for customer-owned step-down transformers. Matching the equipment design of DC fast chargers built to operate at 480 volts helps lower project costs, speed up construction and energization, and reduces space requirements, freeing up room for additional chargers or amenities.
