Entry and eligibility
This contest runs from 9:00 AM (EST) on September 8, 2020 through to 11:59 PM (EST) on November 30, 2020 ("Contest Period"). You will be entered automatically into the ‘Win Free Hydro for a Year’ contest (the "Contest") if you successfully register for eBills on Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited’s ("Toronto Hydro") website at torontohydro.com/mytorontohydro. Bonus entries will be offered if you successfully register for My TorontoHydroTM or sign up for Pre-Authorized Debit during the Contest Period.
This Contest is only open to residents of the City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, who are current residential customers of Toronto Hydro with an account in good standing, who are receiving their Toronto Hydro paper bill by mail, who became customers prior to September 8, 2020, and who are 18 years of age or older, excluding the employees, directors, and officers of Toronto Hydro or any of its affiliates, advertising, and promotional agencies, and agents and representatives and the immediate family members of such employees, directors, and officers, their legal or common-law spouse and/or any persons living in the same household. There is a limit of one (1) entry per each (i) successful eBills registration, (ii) My TorontoHydroTM registration, or (iii) Pre-Authorized Debit signup per account for a total of (3) maximum entries.
No purchase necessary
Eligible persons wishing to enter this Contest without registering for eBills may send a postcard or letter to Toronto Hydro, Marketing, 14 Carlton Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5B 1K5, Attention: Kaitlyn Woods to be delivered to Toronto Hydro by no later than 11:59 PM (EST) November 30, 2020. Each entry must contain the entrant's name, address, telephone number with area code, and 10-digit Toronto Hydro residential customer account number. Toronto Hydro will not accept entries by fax, courier, email, personal delivery, or by any method other than as noted above. Limit one (1) entry per account.
A copy of the Official Contest Rules for this contest will be posted at torontohydro.com/contestrules throughout the Contest Period. By entering this Contest, entrants acknowledge they have read, understood, and agree to comply with these Official Contest Rules. Toronto Hydro reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any entrant they find to be tampering with the entry process or with the operation of this Contest or to be acting in violation of the Official Contest Rules. Toronto Hydro reserves the rights, in its sole discretion, to amend, cancel, terminate, or suspend this Contest, in whole or in part, without prior notice.
All entries become the property of Toronto Hydro and none will be returned. All entries are subject to verification and will be declared invalid if they are late, lost, illegible, incomplete, forged, falsified, altered, or tampered with in any way. Toronto Hydro is not responsible for contacting entrants who provide unclear or incomplete information and assumes no responsibility for entries that are delayed or misdirected during the Contest Period, including any failure to receive an entry as a result of technical problems.
Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of this Contest is a violation of law, and should such an attempt be made, Toronto Hydro reserves the right to exclude such person from the Contest and to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law.
The following prizes will be awarded in this Contest:
- Three (3) prizes of a credit valued at $1,500.00 (CAD) will be applied to a randomly selected Toronto Hydro residential customer account (the “Account Credit”) (i.e., one prize per winner)
- Note: value of $1,500.00 was determined by taking the approximate average annual usage of a Toronto Hydro residential customer at current rates
Prize limits and exclusions
Enrolling and un-enrolling in eBills will not result in any additional chances to win. The Account Credit is not to be combined with any other offer. The Account Credit has no cash value and cannot be refunded. Ceasing to be a Toronto Hydro residential account holder will result in forfeiting any remaining Account Credit amount, if unused.
THE CONTEST BEGINS 9:00 A.M. (EST) ON September 8, 2020 AND ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY November 30, 2020 at 11:59 P.M. (EST). The potential winner will be selected within seven (7) business days following the Contest Period from the total entry pool from the Contest at the offices of Toronto Hydro, 14 Carlton Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5B 1K5. Winners will be selected randomly by the Toronto Hydro Marketing Team at Toronto Hydro's head office under the supervision of Richard McCluskey, Director Public Relations Litigation and Privacy. Odds of winning the Account Credit depend on the number of eligible entries received by the end of the Contest Period and meeting the Contest criteria. The eligible entrant(s) randomly selected will be notified via telephone or email on or before December 15, 2020. Selected entrant must respond to Toronto Hydro via telephone at 416-542-2506 or via email to email@example.com within 96 hours of such notification or they will forfeit the prize. Toronto Hydro may then select a new name from the remaining eligible entrants. This selection process will continue until an eligible entry is selected and a winner is declared. ADDITIONAL RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY. NO SUBSTITUTIONS.
In order to be declared an official winner, the selected entrant must:
- respond to the notice that they have been selected as a potential winner within 96 hours of the notice;
- correctly answer, unaided, a time-limited, mathematical skill-testing question by email to a representative of Toronto Hydro's Customer Care department;
- provide satisfactory identification and proof of eligibility; and
- sign and return (via email or mail) to Toronto Hydro, within three (3) days of receipt thereof, an agreement and release form confirming entrant's eligibility and compliance with the Official Contest Rules, acceptance of the prize as awarded, and releasing Toronto Hydro, the supplier of the prizes and their respective advertising and promotional agencies and their affiliates, and employees, directors, officers, agents and representatives, successors and assigns of each, respectively (collectively, the "Releasees") from all liability for damages s/he may incur as a result of participating in this Contest and accepting the Account Credit.
Failure to comply with these Official Contest Rules will cause the prize to be forfeited, in which case, the prize will be re-awarded at Toronto Hydro's discretion.
All decisions of the Toronto Hydro Marketing Team, including the validation of entries and the evaluation of the entrant's answer to the skill testing question, will be final and binding on the entrant, without right of appeal.
Within three (3) business days of receipt of the completed agreement and release form, Toronto Hydro will notify the winner on how the Account Credit will be applied to their residential customer account.
By entering this Contest, each entrant acknowledges and agrees that the Releasees accept no responsibility for any loss, damages or claims arising from, or caused by, the Contest or the prize awarded, and releases the Releasees in respect thereof.
By entering this Contest, each entrant further acknowledges and agrees that as a condition of winning, Toronto Hydro and its affiliates have the right to use and publicize the winners’ names, which may include publicizing the winners’ names on Toronto Hydro’s Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram pages, and fact that he/she has won a specific prize for publicity purposes, without remuneration or liability, except where prohibited by law, and agrees to sign a release acknowledging such rights.
By entering this Contest, each entrant further acknowledges and agrees that as a condition of entering that all entries and submissions become the sole property of Toronto Hydro and its affiliates and Toronto Hydro has the right to use as desired without remuneration or liability.
This promotion is subject to all applicable laws in the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein.
Following the Contest Period, the name of the winner may be posted on Toronto Hydro’s website, Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram pages.

Toronto Hydro reserves the right, to withdraw, amend, or suspend this Contest (or to amend these Rules) in any way, in the event of an error, technical problem, computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failure, or any other cause beyond the reasonable control of Toronto Hydro that interferes with the proper conduct of this Contest as contemplated by these Rules. Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of this Contest in any way (as determined by Toronto Hydro in its sole and absolute discretion) is a violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, Toronto Hydro reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law.
Toronto Hydro reserves the right to cancel, amend or suspend this Contest, or to amend these Rules, in any way without prior notice or obligation, in the event of any accident, printing, administrative, or other error of any kind, or for any other reason whatsoever. Without limiting the generality of the forgoing, Toronto Hydro reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to administer an alternate test of skill as it deems appropriate based on the circumstances and/or to comply with applicable law.
Toronto Hydro reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, and without prior notice, to adjust any of the dates and/or timeframes stipulated in these Rules, to the extent necessary, for purposes of verifying compliance by any entrant, or as a result of any technical or other problems, or in light of any other circumstances which, in the opinion of Toronto Hydro, in its sole and absolute discretion, affect the proper administration of the Contest as contemplated in these Rules, or for any other reason. In the event of any discrepancy or inconsistency between the terms and conditions of these Rules and disclosures or other statements contained in any Contest-related materials, including, but not limited to: television, print or online advertising; the terms and conditions of these Rules shall prevail, govern and control to the fullest extent permitted by law.
