Summer 2026 City roadwork restrictions

Understanding potential service impacts during this period.

This summer, Toronto will be one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup 2026™. As the city prepares for increased activity around this major global event, Toronto Hydro is coordinating with customers, stakeholders and the City of Toronto to help support effective planning and safe, dependable service.

City of Toronto roadwork restrictions (May–July 2026)

The City of Toronto has announced temporary roadwork restrictions along certain key routes and in select areas of the city between May and July 2026, in support of FIFA World Cup 2026™ Toronto. As a result, some non‑emergency electrical work in these areas may experience changes to project timelines during this period.

How this may impact electrical work in affected areas

As a result of the temporary restrictions, some non‑emergency electrical work — including certain customer service connections that require access to designated public roadways — may experience timeline changes, depending on project specifics. Toronto Hydro continues to work closely with customers and the City to plan, forecast and coordinate work in these areas, with the goal of minimizing customer schedule adjustments wherever possible.

Work taking place entirely on private property that does not require City permits or road disruption approvals will generally be able to proceed. Non-emergency electrical work outside designated restriction areas is not expected to be impacted.

All emergency electrical work, including power outage restoration, will continue throughout the restriction period to support safe, reliable service for Torontonians.

Frequently asked questions

The City of Toronto has announced temporary roadwork restrictions affecting construction activities along certain key routes and in select areas of the city between May and July 2026, in support of the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ Toronto. These restrictions apply to all organizations that perform work in the City's public right‑of‑way.

During this period, the restrictions may, in some cases, limit Toronto Hydro’s ability to occupy or obstruct public roadways in designated areas — access that is often required for our crews to safely complete certain types of electrical work. As a result, some non‑emergency electrical work in affected areas may experience timeline changes.

Toronto Hydro continues to work closely with customers and the City to plan, forecast and coordinate work in these areas, with the goal of minimizing customer schedule adjustments wherever possible.

Some non‑emergency electrical work — including certain customer service connections that require access to designated public roadways — may be impacted during this period. Work taking place entirely on private property and not requiring City permits or Road Disruption Activity Reporting System (RoDARS) applications may be able to proceed, subject to project specifics. Non-emergency electrical work outside designated restriction areas is not expected to be impacted.

All emergency electrical work, including power outage restoration, will continue throughout the restriction period to support safe, reliable service for Torontonians.

We are currently reviewing customer projects that are already underway to understand any potential impacts. We will communicate directly with affected customers if their project is expected to be impacted by the City's temporary roadway restrictions.

For projects that are not yet underway, we encourage customers to submit service requests as early as possible. Early submission gives us the time needed to understand the specific work required, assess potential impacts and plan next steps.

Toronto Hydro is working closely with the City and with customers to plan, forecast and coordinate electrical work in affected areas during this period. Where possible, the City is collaborating with Toronto Hydro to facilitate construction work and has established an escalation process to review requests.

Toronto Hydro continues to work closely with the City and with customers to plan, forecast and coordinate electrical work in affected areas during this period. As we approach the restriction period, there are a few steps you can take to help support planning and coordination for your project:

  • Submit your request early: Service connection timelines can range from a few weeks to several months depending on the project type and location. Submitting early can help reduce the risk of delays.
  • Provide complete details and documents up front (if available): Including relevant documentation with your online submission helps prevent delays in processing. If you don’t have everything ready, you can share any outstanding documents with your assigned Toronto Hydro project coordinator as they become available.
  • Confirm your main point of contact: Ensure we have the correct contact information for the customer/contractor who will coordinate scheduling and respond to questions during review and construction. Please also list any additional contacts so we can keep all parties informed on project updates.
  • Prepare your site for construction: Before work begins, ensure the site is safe and provides clear access to all required equipment/locations so crews can complete work efficiently when permitted.
  • Plan ahead for inspections: Most projects require an Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) inspection — planning for this step early can help avoid last-minute scheduling impacts.
  • Stay connected for project-specific timing: If you have a Toronto Hydro project coordinator, reach out to them to discuss your project schedule. If you don’t, you can connect with us by email at contactus@torontohydro.com, and our team will help guide you on next steps.
