Is your system working harder than it needs to?
Many hydronic heating and cooling systems waste energy by operating sometimes over-sized pumps at full capacity while simultaneously restricting flow with a valve. That's like hitting the gas and slamming on the brakes at the same time!
Toronto Hydro's new PUMPsaver program is an end-to-end solution to optimize your hydronic systems. It's offered free of charge. If you qualify, we'll arrange for a professional to add variable frequency drives (VFDs) to pumps and then balance them so they run according to their actual, rather than maximum, demand.
This simple two-step process typically reduces electricity use by up to 35% – that's ongoing savings of $4,000 to $20,000** (estimated, depending on the pump size) in electricity costs a year.
*Projects average a value of $10,000 to $15,000.
**Based on a 35% reduction in the pump's electrical consumption in a heating and cooling system and electricity costs of $0.15/kWh.
Improve system efficiency by up to 35%
You'll also benefit from reduced maintenance costs, improved system performance and your hydronic system will be up to 35% more energy efficient.
We measure and verify savings
Pumps will be metered and monitored to determine savings. As the hours of operation of the pumps are continuous and consistent, pre- and post-measurement of electrical loads associated with the pumps will be relatively short in duration.
Expert implementation and support
All installation and optimization services are performed by a qualified hydronic balancing specialist, at Toronto Hydro's expense, to ensure optimum system performance.
Is your building eligible?
To participate, you must:
- Own a multi-residential condominium or commercial building (or have written permission from the owner)
- Be a Toronto Hydro customer
- Have a main chilled or hot water supply pump in your building greater than 10 HP in size, ideally with both a heating (not hot) and cooling loop
- Have a pump that is compatible with a VFD installation
A simple, end-to-end solution:
If your building is eligible, here's how the program works:
