Entry and eligibility
This contest runs from 9:00 AM (EST) on August 29, 2019 through to 11:59 PM (EST) on December 31, 2019 ("Contest Period"). You will be entered automatically into the "Fall 2019 Starbucks eBill Campaign" contest (the "Contest") if you if you successfully make the switch to eBills on your Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited ("Toronto Hydro") residential customer account during the Contest Period (the “Contest Entry”).
This Contest is only open to current residents of the City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, who are current residential customers of Toronto Hydro with an account in good standing, who are receiving their Toronto Hydro paper bill by mail prior to the Contest Period, and who are 18 years of age or older, excluding the employees, directors, and officers of Toronto Hydro or any of its affiliates, advertising, and promotional agencies, and agents and representatives and the immediate family members of such employees, directors, and officers, their legal or common-law spouse and/or any persons living in the same household.
Additionally, in order to be eligible for the Coffee for a Year Prize, entrants must be a registered My Toronto Hydro user and/or registered for pre-authorized debit payments and make the switch to eBills on their residential customer account on or after October 23, 2019 but prior to the end of the Contest Period.
Enrolling and un-enrolling in eBills will not result in any additional chances to win the Instant Win Prize and Coffee for a Year Prize. There is a limit of one (1) Contest Entry per account.
No purchase necessary
Eligible persons wishing to enter this Contest without switching to eBills may send a postcard or letter to Toronto Hydro, Marketing, 14 Carlton Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5B 1K5, Attention: Aynsley Wright to be delivered to Toronto Hydro by no later than 11:59 PM (EST) December 31, 2019. Each entry must contain the entrant's name, address, telephone number with area code, and 10-digit Toronto Hydro residential customer account number. Toronto Hydro will not accept entries by fax, courier, e-mail, personal delivery, or by any method other than as noted above.
A copy of the Official Contest Rules for this contest will be posted at torontohydro.com/contestrules throughout the Contest Period. By entering this Contest, entrants acknowledge they have read, understood, and agree to comply with these Official Contest Rules. Toronto Hydro reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any entrant they find to be tampering with the entry process or with the operation of this Contest or to be acting in violation of the Official Contest Rules. Toronto Hydro reserves the rights, in its sole discretion, to amend, cancel, terminate, or suspend this Contest, in whole or in part, without prior notice.
All entries become the property of Toronto Hydro and none will be returned. All entries are subject to verification and will be declared invalid if they are late, lost, illegible, incomplete, forged, falsified, altered, or tampered with in any way. Toronto Hydro is not responsible for contacting entrants who provide unclear or incomplete information and assumes no responsibility for entries that are delayed or misdirected during the Contest Period, including any failure to receive an entry as a result of technical problems.
Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of this Contest is a violation of law, and should such an attempt be made, Toronto Hydro reserves the right to exclude such person from the Contest and to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law.
The following prizes will be awarded in this Contest:
- All participants with a successful Contest Entry will receive a Starbucks Coffee Canada, Inc. (“Starbucks”) electronic gift card valued at $5.00 (CAD) each (each, an “Instant Win Prize”).
- One (1) prize of a Starbucks electronic gift card valued at $1,825.00 (CAD) will be awarded to a randomly selected Toronto Hydro residential customer who meets the additional eligibility and registration Contest Entry requirements described above (the “Coffee for a Year Prize”).
- Note: value of $1,825.00 (CAD) was determined by taking a daily Starbucks coffee cost of $5.00 (CAD) and multiplying it by the time period of three hundred and sixty-five (365) days.
The Sponsor reserves the right to modify the supplier at any time. The Instant Win Prize and Coffee for a Year Prize must be accepted as awarded. No cash substitutions. Limit of one (1) Instant Win Prize and Coffee for a Year Prize, as applicable, per residential customer account.
Prize limits and exclusions
Registering and un-registering for eBills will not result in any additional chances to win. The Instant Win Prize and Coffee for a Year Prize is not to be combined with any other offer. The Instant Win Prize and Coffee for a Year Prize have no cash value and cannot be refunded.
THE CONTEST BEGINS 9:00 A.M. (EST) ON August 29th, 2019 AND ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY DECEMBER 31, 2019 at 11:59 P.M. (EST). The potential winner will be selected within seven (7) business days following the Contest Period from the total entry pool from the Contest at the offices of Toronto Hydro, 14 Carlton Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5B 1K5. Winners will be selected randomly by the Toronto Hydro Marketing Team at Toronto Hydro's head office under the supervision of Richard McCluskey, Director, Public Relations, Litigation & Privacy. Odds of winning the Coffee for a Year Prize depend on the number of eligible entries received by the end of the Contest Period and meeting the Contest criteria. The eligible entrant(s) randomly selected will be notified via telephone or email on or before Monday, January 20, 2020. Selected entrant must respond to Toronto Hydro via telephone at 416-542-7802 or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org within 96 hours of such notification or they will forfeit the prize. Toronto Hydro may then select a new name from the remaining eligible entrants. This selection process will continue until an eligible entry is selected and a winner is declared. ADDITIONAL RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY. NO SUBSTITUTIONS.
In order to be declared an official winner, the selected entrant must:
- respond to the notice that they have been selected as a potential winner within 96 hours of the notice;
- correctly answer, unaided, a time-limited, mathematical skill-testing question by email to a representative of Toronto Hydro's Customer Care department;
- provide satisfactory identification and proof of eligibility; and
- sign and return (via email or mail) to Toronto Hydro, within three (3) days of receipt thereof, an agreement and release form confirming entrant's eligibility and compliance with the Official Contest Rules, acceptance of the prize as awarded, and releasing Toronto Hydro, the supplier of the prizes and their respective advertising and promotional agencies and their affiliates, and employees, directors, officers, agents and representatives, successors and assigns of each, respectively (collectively, the "Releasees") from all liability for damages s/he may incur as a result of participating in this Contest and accepting the Instant Win Prize and Coffee for a Year Prize, as applicable.
Failure to comply with these Official Contest Rules will cause the prize(s) to be forfeited, in which case, the prize(s) will be re-awarded at Toronto Hydro's discretion.
All decisions of the Toronto Hydro Marketing Team, including the validation of entries and the evaluation of the entrant's answer to the skill testing question, will be final and binding on the entrant, without right of appeal.
Within three (3) business days of receipt of the completed agreement and release form, Toronto Hydro will notify the winner on how the Instant Win Prize and Coffee for a Year Prize, as applicable, will be delivered to their possession.
By entering this Contest, each entrant acknowledges and agrees that the Releasees accept no responsibility for any loss, damages or claims arising from, or caused by, the Contest or the prize(s) awarded, and releases the Releasees in respect thereof.
By entering this Contest, each entrant further acknowledges and agrees that as a condition of winning, Toronto Hydro and its affiliates have the right to use and publicize the winner’s names, which may include publicizing the winner’s names on Toronto Hydro’s Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram pages, and fact that he/she has won a specific prize(s) for publicity purposes, without remuneration or liability, except where prohibited by law, and agrees to sign a release acknowledging such rights.
By entering this Contest, each entrant further acknowledges and agrees that as a condition of entering that all entries and submissions become the sole property of Toronto Hydro and its affiliates and Toronto Hydro has the right to use as desired without remuneration or liability.
This promotion is subject to all applicable laws in the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein.
Following the Contest Period, the name of the winner may be posted on Toronto Hydro’s website, Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram pages.

Toronto Hydro reserves the right, to withdraw, amend, or suspend this Contest (or to amend these Rules) in any way, in the event of an error, technical problem, computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failure, or any other cause beyond the reasonable control of Toronto Hydro that interferes with the proper conduct of this Contest as contemplated by these Rules. Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of this Contest in any way (as determined by Toronto Hydro in its sole and absolute discretion) is a violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, Toronto Hydro reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law.
Toronto Hydro reserves the right to cancel, amend or suspend this Contest, or to amend these Rules, in any way without prior notice or obligation, in the event of any accident, printing, administrative, or other error of any kind, or for any other reason whatsoever. Without limiting the generality of the forgoing, Toronto Hydro reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to administer an alternate test of skill as it deems appropriate based on the circumstances and/or to comply with applicable law.
Toronto Hydro reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, and without prior notice, to adjust any of the dates and/or timeframes stipulated in these Rules, to the extent necessary, for purposes of verifying compliance by any entrant, or as a result of any technical or other problems, or in light of any other circumstances which, in the opinion of Toronto Hydro, in its sole and absolute discretion, affect the proper administration of the Contest as contemplated in these Rules, or for any other reason. In the event of any discrepancy or inconsistency between the terms and conditions of these Rules and disclosures or other statements contained in any Contest-related materials, including, but not limited to: television, print or online advertising; the terms and conditions of these Rules shall prevail, govern and control to the fullest extent permitted by law.
