Bremner Station FAQs
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
What is Bremner Station and why do we need it?
Bremner Station is a proposed transformer station that will provide service to an important part of Toronto’s downtown core. This new station will help Toronto Hydro replace obsolete equipment at Windsor Station and will increase reliability and supply in Toronto’s downtown core. The station will be built adjacent to Toronto’s landmark Roundhouse building at Bremner Blvd. and Rees Street.
If a major power interruption occurred today, parts of Toronto could experience extensive outages and a large part of Toronto’s business and financial district would be affected. That is why the proposed Bremner Station is part of Toronto Hydro’s capital program – an investment key to improving future reliability.
The station is also part of the coordinated approach with Hydro One and the Ontario Power Authority to increase future reliability of Toronto’s electricity supply.
Why has Toronto Hydro selected this location?
The location was selected as it is centrally located close to the downtown core’s business district and close to Windsor Station.
In addition, the land is already zoned for industrial use.
What is the approvals process for this project?
On April 4, 2012, the Minister of the Environment decided an individual environmental assessment (EA) is not required.
The class EA for minor transmission facilities is now final.
The City's site plan approval process has begun and Toronto Hydro is working with City Planning as part of this process. One the site plan is approved, the City will issue a building permit.
New public consulation dates will be announced.
What is the time frame for the project?
Pending approvals, Toronto Hydro expects to begin construction in the third quarter of 2012. The first phase of the project is planned to be operational in 2014.
Once Bremner Station is on-line, Toronto Hydro customers can begin the much needed modernizing of the Windsor Station.
What about conservation?
Toronto Hydro continues to aggressively promote conservation and efficiency programs.
Since 2005, Toronto Hydro customers have reduced electricity demand by over 350 MW despite intensification and population increase in the City.
We have a goal to reduce a further 286 MW and 1300 GWh by end of 2014.
