We Work With Customers
To Reduce Our Overall Environmental Impact

We work with our customers in two ways: first, we design and deliver electricity Conservation and Demand Management (CDM) programs that help them reduce their electricity use and get the most from every kilowatt they use.

Secondly, we support a number of programs including the Citys Urban Forest campaign, Ontario Forestry Association and Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests through tree planting initiatives and forestry education programs.

We also work with the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) and the City of Toronto on the Lights OUT Toronto program to protect migrating birds.

2007 Conservation and Demand Management Achievements

In 2007, we:

  • Achieved savings of 167 MW in our conservation portfolio, exceeding our original 2007 target of 104 MW, and bringing our total savings to approximately 355 MW since the start of our programs in 2005.
  • Executed successful CDM programs throughout the year, including:
    • Summer Savings for Residential Customers where 30% of eligible customers participated, saving approximately 57.6 million kWh
    • Summer Challenge for Businesses where 24% of eligible business customers participated, saving approximately 87.8 million kWh
    • peaksaver had 12,700 new installations for an incremental reduction of approximately 15 MW from the grid
  • Continued the Great Refrigerator Roundup where we collected an additional 5,047 appliances and removed 1.37 MW from the grid
  • Collected and recycled 6,338 old room air conditioners, representing 4.36 MW
  • Collected and recycled 18,619 strings of incandescent holiday lights, representing 1.8 MW
  • Were recognized by the Electricity Distributors Association with the Innovation Award for the Summer Challenge program.
  • Won the prestigious international Platts Global Award for Energy Efficiency for the peaksaver demand response program.
  • Won the Green Toronto Energy Conservation Award for the effective and innovative Summer Challenge program from the City of Toronto.

We have also worked with agencies for low income/social housing and replaced 6,275 old fridges with energy-efficient models, 7,687 stoves with energy-efficient stoves and 20,782 incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.
