How much water, electricity and money can I save by using an ENERGY STAR® qualified washing machine?

ENERGY STAR®  qualified clothes washers use 35 to 50 per cent less water and at least 30 per cent less energy per load than other washers**, this can save you up to $67 per year on electricity and water!

By using a drying rack for just 25 per cent of the time (instead of your dryer), you could save up to $21 per year on your electricity bill!

Why is Toronto Hydro offering a discount on ENERGY STAR® qualified washing machines and a free eco-friendly drying rack?

Toronto Hydro is encouraging customers to switch to energy-efficient appliances and help relieve stress on our electricity distribution system and manage their electricity consumption.  This program meets Ontario's call to establish a 'conservation culture' in the province and includes the promotion of energy-efficient products, incentive programs and public education.

Being water efficient has many benefits.  Saving water contributes to a healthy environment and watershed, providing current and future generations with clean sources for drinking water.  Water conservation can also help delay costly infrastructure expansion and this helps the City and our customers manage water costs.  Using less water also means using less electricity.  Did you know that running a tap for five minutes can use as much energy as leaving a 60-watt light bulb burning for 14 hours+?  Using water and energy as efficiently as possible go hand-in-hand.

How is the drying rack eco-friendly?

This product is made from Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) certified eastern USA white pine lumber.  The manufacturing process of cutting and shaving the wood creates wood waste that is then used for the fires in the kiln drying process as well as bagged and sold for horse bedding.  This reduces the environmental footprint of the manufacturing process.

The manufacturing facility is located in Maine, USA and all parts used are sourced from the same State.  The manufacturer of this drying rack has been in the business of producing wood products since 1881.  In that time, they have acquired and amassed 30,000 acres of Timberland, all of which is SFI certified.  In the year 2000, the manufacturer established a 22,000 acre land conservation easement in the state of Maine.  This easement was the largest land conservation in the state and operates as a sustainable working forest, as well as stops all future development on that land.

What else can I do to conserve water?

Whether it's at work, around the home or in the garden, Toronto Water offers incentives, rebates, tools and tips to help reduce water use.  Here are just a few:

  • Keep a jug of drinking water in the fridge to avoid waiting for cold running water.
  • If you have an automatic dishwasher, use it only to wash full loads, and use the energy saver or shortest cycle.
  • Reduce water flow from your taps.  Install a low flow aerator on your sink faucets and reduce water use by 25 per cent.
  • Don't let your water run away on you.  Whether you're preparing food or brushing your teeth, never let the tap run continuously.
  • Fix leaky taps and toilets.
  • Create a water efficient landscape - discover why native plants are a low-maintenance and environmentally-friendly choice for all gardens
  • Don't over-water your lawn.  Mother Nature provides plenty of water during the spring.  Limit summer watering to one inch, once a week.

Visit toronto.ca/watereff or call 311 for more information on water efficiency programs including toilet and washer rebate programs and the Summer WaterSaver Lawn and Garden Visits.
