ABOUT POWERWISE
PowerWISE TM is the partnership between the Ontario Government and the six participating local electricity utilities that comprise the Coalition of Local Distributors (CLD).
PowerWISE represents conservation, education and programs geared toward the residential and small commercial customers within defined areas in Ontario.
What does powerWISE mean for customers?
For customers, powerWISE will become the recognizable name for pro-conservation products or services offered by their local distribution company (LDC) and will serve to provide consistent information about conservation via the web, corporate literature and advertising.
Who started powerWISE?
PowerWISE was created by six utilities after the Ontario Government called for a 'Conservation Culture" in the province. These six utilities became known as the Coalition of Local Distributors (CLD) and represent over 40 per cent of electricity customers in the province.
CLD participants include:
- Toronto Hydro Corporation
- Enersource Corporation
- Hamilton Utilities Corporation
- Hydro Ottawa Limited
- PowerStream Incorporated
- Veridian Corporation
Government's Objectives:
The Ontario Government's call for the creation of a "Conservation Culture" in the province laid out two specific objectives.
- To reduce Ontario's peak demand for electricity by 5% by 2007.
- A commitment to the installation of 800,000 SMART electricity meters by 2007, and the full deployment of SMART meters for all electricity consumers by 2010.
Working in partnership, the CLD stated in their Conservation and Demand Management Plans that they will deliver over $70 million in comprehensive electricity conservation programs for the province.
Comprehensive electricity conservation programs include:
- Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL) change out programs,
- Seasonal LED exchanges,
- Refrigerator buy-backs,
- Smart meters,
- Commercial lighting upgrades,
- Building automation controls,
- Strategies and programs for distribution loss reduction,
- Load displacement and stand-by generators programs
