Net Metering Connection Process

Step 1 – Request to connect with Toronto Hydro

The applicant is asked to read and understand the Net Metering Connection Application Guidelines before completing any forms. If you have any questions or concerns, please email fit@torontohydro.com or call 416-542-3099.

For Net Metering projects over 10kW, a Connection Impact Assessment (CIA) must be performed by Toronto Hydro. A CIA is a more detailed assessment of the proposed project’s impact on the Toronto Hydro electricity grid.

The applicant is asked to submit the completed Embedded Generation Connection Application Form  and all required documents listed in the Net Metering Connection Application Guidelines to Toronto Hydro’s Generation Planning team at fit@torontohydro.com to begin the process.

Step 2 – Toronto Hydro site inspection

Toronto Hydro will schedule a site inspection prior to the installation of your project. The inspection will document pertinent information about the connection process.

Step 3 – Process to install

After the site inspection, providing that all the requirements can be met to connect the applicant’s project to the electricity grid, a Connection agreement will then be negotiated between Toronto Hydro and the applicant. Once all of these conditions are met, the applicant will then be able to install their Net Metering project.

Step 4 – Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) inspection

After project installation, the applicant will need to schedule and complete a safety inspection with the ESA. A scanned copy of the ESA notice of inspection shall be emailed to Toronto Hydro’s Generation Planning team at fit@torontohydro.com as soon as the final ESA inspection is completed. Please specify in the email subject line: ESA Notice of inspection and project address.

Step 5 – Finalize your connection

Toronto Hydro will replace the existing load meter with a bi-directional meter for settlement and data purposes. Once the project is operational, customers participating in the Net Metering program will have the net energy charge on their hydro bill adjusted according to the Net Metering Regulation.
