Call Before You Dig

Before starting any work in the yard, call us for the location of underground power lines, especially if you're planning to use auguring or trenching equipment. Our service locators will confirm and mark Toronto Hydro-Electric System owned underground electrical cables.

You should know that, under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (section 228), it is the owner's responsibility to have all underground services marked for the safety of contracted service workers prior to having any excavation work done on private property.

Contact Toronto Hydro if:

  • Have tree branches or shrubs growing on or around our equipment
  • Are planning to remove or prune a tree – call us first! Our trained arborists will attempt to directionally prune trees (train them to grow away from power lines) or provide you with guidance on choosing an arborist. (Contact LEAF if you are planning to plant a tree.)

Severe weather and tree limbs can damage Toronto Hydro equipment. Always be cautious around equipment, especially if it's damaged. Stay clear of downed power lines - they could be energized. Keep a distance of at least six meters or 20 feet away. Call Toronto Hydro at 416-542-8000 or 911 to report a downed wire of damaged equipment.

All Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited customers living in the former Toronto (downtown), East York, North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke and York districts can call Ontario One Call at 1.800.400.2255 for any underground hydro locate requests or make the request online.
