Toronto Hydro is committed to building energy-efficient, sustainable and modern infrastructure in neighbourhoods across the city. Part of these upgrades include the installation of LED light bulbs in over 170,000 streetlights in Toronto.
LED lights provide many benefits, including energy savings, increased reliability, decreased maintenance costs and improved light quality. LED lights are considered “dark sky-friendly,” reducing light pollution by allowing light to reach the pavement surface where it’s needed.
As part of the multi-phased approach, Toronto Hydro has installed over 150 LED lights in existing fixtures on six streets in advance of a full city-wide roll-out. The lights are currently being monitored for quality, performance and potential energy savings.
During the next phase, Toronto Hydro will work with the City of Toronto to implement new LED light fixtures on the remaining streetlights in Toronto.
