Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited is one of the largest electricity distribution utilities in Canada, delivering electricity to a broadly diverse, economically robust, residential, commercial and industrial customer base in the City of Toronto.

 

Services
    Ensures the safe, reliable and cost-effective delivery of electrical power to approximately 684,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the City of Toronto, which has a population base of 2.5 million.
    Plans, maintains and operates Toronto’s electrical distribution system infrastructure safely, efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner.
    Delivers consistent, high-quality customer service.
    A leader in the design and delivery of electricity Conservation and Demand Management (“CDM”) programs.

 

2008 Achievements
    Among the leading organizations in Ontario in the delivery of CDM initiatives to help customers conserve energy, save money and help the environment.
    Achieved savings of 64,373 MWh in its conservation portfolio bringing its total savings to approximately 537,822 MWh since the start of its programs in 2005.
    Executed successful CDM programs throughout the year, including:
 
    peaksaver®: 11,000 new installations for a potential incremental reduction of approximately 12.4 MW of peak demand from the grid;
    Take a Load Off Toronto: 75,000 clotheslines were distributed for a reduction of approximately 18,859 MWh from the grid;
    Keep Cool: 7,750 inefficient air conditioners were collected and recycled for a reduction of approximately 2,025 MWh from the grid;
    Festive Light Exchange: 18,800 sets of incandescent seasonal lights were exchanged for 9,550 LED strings for a reduction in energy savings of approximately 305 MWh;
    The Great Refrigerator Roundup: collected an additional 5,700 appliances for a reduction of approximately 4,187 MWh from the grid;
    Low Income: 57,373 CFL bulbs were installed in 12,592 social housing units across Toronto and achieved energy savings of 6,454 MWh;
    Business Incentive Program (BIP): approved 107 applications from businesses for energy-efficient projects and achieved 32,544 MWh of energy savings.
    Installed approximately 171,000 smart meters, leading all Ontario utilities in smart meter installations and bringing the total number of installed smart meters to approximately 587,000.
    Held first-ever Toronto Hydro Day where visitors learned about the infrastructure rebuild program, employment opportunities, renewable generation and energy conservation.
    Invested $160.3 million in distribution plant capital.
    94.62 per cent of employees had a perfect safety record.
    Currently have 85 apprentices enrolled in its trades school.

 

2009 Objectives
    Provide a safe and healthy work environment.
    Modernize the distribution system.
    Deliver superior customer service.
    Maintain financial strength.
    Work closely with the City to help implement its Climate Change, Clean Air and Sustainable Action Plan.
    Monitor the progression of Bill 150, Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009.
